Oi! So where have I been?
Greetings one and all! (In reality, probably no one. Sniff, so sad!)
I've been on a hiatus of sorts. Life, that ever jealous mistress of one's time, has enjoyed keeping me busy. And busy I have been . . . and yet, not so busy. Oh, the sad tales I could spin that would bring tears to your eyes -- stories of puppy dogs who eat novels and houses that swallow the very fabric of space and time itself.
The sad, sad truth is that I did not finish my novel during NaNoWriMo. Things just got way too crazy during the month of November for me. I was on track to meet the 50,000 word count goal for my novel. I could have finished. But it just wasn't to be.
At the time I was more than a little annoyed. But in time, I have come to adopt a more sanguine view of my "failure" to finish the first draft in one month's time. They say writing is a process. True. But sometimes that process just needs to take time.
Now, I don't mean to make excuses for procrastinating or putting things off till some undetermined time in the future. But in my case, the extra time has allowed a lot of fortunate accidents to occur -- new character traits and motivations; plot ideas; intriguing subplots; interwoven themes -- all of which have made the story, and subsequently my novel, all the better. Would I have preferred finishing on time? Sure. But not at the expense of the story.
All in all, I'm glad for the way things have turned out. Maybe it's taken me longer than it should, since this is my first novel. I would like to think the next one will come more easily, and hopefully on time. But I wouldn't bet on it. ;)
